There are generally two leading reasons why
“Viton” seals are used within hydraulic cylinders instead of
traditional Buna-N or Carboxylated Nitrile rubber material seals.
Viton material can withstand higher temperatures
up to approximately 400° F while
standard Buna and carboxylated materials can only withstand
temperatures up to
approximately 250° F.
Many hydraulic fluids are incompatible with
standard Buna and Carboxylated
rubber based seal materials. When these fluids are present, Viton
seal material is often used
because it is not subject to seal material degradation due to
fluid incompatibility as are
the standard nitrile rubber based seal materials.
For high heat applications it is very important
to know the temperature surrounding the cylinder. Some other
important questions that should be made known to Peninsular
include the following:
Is this temperature constant or intermittent?
How often does the cylinder cycle?
Are there temperature variances at the cylinder,
or is the temperature constant?
Is there any hot material making physical
contact with the cylinder? If so, what part
of the cylinder is being contacted by this hot material?
Knowing the type of hydraulic
fluid that is used within your hydraulic system and within the
cylinders working inside that system is extremely important !
Your communication back to Peninsular will allow us to determine
the correct seal material to use when manufacturing your cylinder.
Failure to inform us of this information can result in
catastrophic cylinder failure, often within a very short period of
time, due to fluid incompatibility with the seal materials which
may be used within your cylinder.
Note, Viton Seals are not
considered standard seal material and must be ordered separately.
Although Viton seal materials do not contain the same wear
characteristics as Buna-N and Carboxylated nitrile rubber type
seals, they are highly effective in combating fluid
incompatibility and high heat conditions that may be present in
certain applications.
Peninsular’s team of Fluid Power Engineers will assist you with
high temperature applications and provide recommendations for
various types of seal materials to meet your specific requirements
when excessive heat conditions are present. Viton seals are a
popular solution to many types of heat problems that effect
hydraulic cylinders.
When you select Viton seals to be used within your cylinder a /V
will become present in the Peninsular cylinder part number after
you have submitted the cylinder for configuration.
